Mindset Reflections

  • Ethical

According to Mays Business School, an Ethical mindset begins with addressing the questions of: "Who do I want to be?" and "How do I want to be remembered?" Having an ethical mindset requires us to reflect upon the short-term and long-term consequences of our decision, and then deciding upon what decision we could stand behind with integrity and honor. Failing to act ethically in the business world and have detrimental, domino effects on an individual's reputation and on the company's reputation.  Ms. Brooke Deterline gave an excellent Ted Talk on the relationship between ethics and courage called "Creating ethical cultures in business." She defined courage as "the ability to act from our hearts in the face of fear," and how we through practice, we can rewire our brains so we consistently act honor our values in the face of fear. We are all born with the innate capacity for courage.

  • Global

  • Systems Thinking

  • Entrepreneurial

Having an Entrepreneurial mindset is about forging your own future, seeing each problem as an opportunity rather than obstacle, and having the ambition, courage and hope to persist despite challenges and failures. A great Ted Talk over the entrepreneurial mindset is called "How the entrepreneurial mindset can change you" by Henry Scheel. Mr. Scheel makes a great point by highlighting that an entrepreneurial mindset is about being proactive in creating our own opportunities; "life is an open opportunity, and we can do with it whatever we want."  Having an entrepreneurial mindset is crucial in business because it fosters innovation, economic growth and improvement of lifestyles across the globe.

Core Competencies Reflections

  • Lead

At the center of leadership is the capacity to serve others in realizing their full potential. Being a leader means acting with courage, integrity and compassion. In business, leaders not only bring about innovation, but they also strive to be dependable and honest to those around them. Ari Zucker gives a great Ted Talk, called "5 Pillars of Effective Leadership." Mr. Zucker argues that a good leader leads with: Transparency, Accountability, Love, Empathy and Curiosity.

  • Communicate

  • Work with Others

  • Create Opportunities

  • Manage People and Projects

  • Act Ethically

  • Think Critically

The ability to think critically is the capacity to observe and reflect upon problems and questions from multiple different angles. I would argue critical thinking is utterly important in the business world as it fosters creativity and deliberation, allowing business to continue innovating in new ways, and maintain a competitive advantage. A great Ted Talk that demonstrates the application of critical thinking is called "What physics taught me about marketing" by Dan Cobley.  Mr. Cobley begins with the well-known equation that Force=Mass* Acceleration. Rearrange the formula, and you get Acceleration= Force/Mass; the greater the Mass, the more force is needed to change its direction (acceleration.) Then, Mr. Cobley explained how this concept can be applied to businesses: the bigger the brand, the more force needs to be applied to change its positioning. This is a great example of critical thinking because it involves the creative application of a seemingly unrelated topic. This application of physics to marketing allows us to view and think about marketing from a different perspective.
