McFerrin Methods Workshops
September 1st, 2020: Are You as Good at Communicating as You Think?
This workshop gave me practical skills on how to approach a difficult conversation. A few of the key takeaways included avoiding unwarranted assumptions or direct accusations. Instead, start with facts, state your perspective, and then ask for clarification. Another strategy for a successful conversation is called "priming", meaning you offer your best guess at their emotions to get them talking.
October 30th, 2020: 10 Essentials Every Entrepreneur Needs to Know
This workshop focused on the legal aspects of starting a business, including what type of business entity to set up, how to approach contracts, and the importance of keeping organized records.

Semester 1 Reflection
Fear of Failure
Since switching my major to Business, I have been confronted with the hope and excitement to start my own business, yet held back by the fear of failing. Many times I found myself making excuse after excuse for why my ideas wouldn't work, for why I shouldn't even try. However, I've also across a few moments were I saw an idea similar to mine succeed and then I'd think to myself, "if only I had pursued that idea earlier." At that moment, I decided I needed to have the courage to pursue my business ideas or somebody else will. I was the only person standing in the way of my own success. I would rather try and fail than question "what if." I have chosen to pursue Entrepreneurship, and with that comes overcoming the fear of failure, humiliation and defeat.
ISTM 210
One of my favorite classes this semester was Information Systems 210. ISTM 210 was an introductory class to computer software, networks, malware, databases, HTML code, and computer security. Learning about databases and HTML code was very intriguing because I had never truly reflected upon how much data corporations store about their users into databases on. a daily basis. In addition, I enjoyed learning about HTML code and what truly goes into making a website. Going forward, I believe classes like this will help me on my entrepreneurial journey by giving me the skills to be an entrepreneur in the tech field.
MSC Spencer Leadership Conference
This semester, I become a delegate of the MSC Spencer Leadership Conference because I don't believe school teaches students enough about what it means to be a leader. From my perspective, I would argue we tend to overlook day-to-day leaders; the people making small differences on a daily basis in our local community. The three pillars of the Conference are Innovation, Selfless Service, and Self Authorship. I hope this conference leads be to become a better leader with my daily interactions, and on a larger stage, like within a corporation.
IGNITE at Texas A&M
As Membership Chair of IGNITE, recruiting efforts were particularly difficult this semester, given we could not go about our traditional approach. Instead, we relied heavily on Instagram and mass emails to inform the student population about our organization. Another challenge we faced was maintaining member engagement during Zoom meetings. Having learned from our mistakes this semester, we will be taking a more direct, personal, organized and consistent approach towards recruitment on an online platform. Before our first general meeting, IGNITE will be interviewing all interested members in an effort to foster a sense of community, despite everything being online. In addition, we will be posting three times weekly on our Instagram, and interacting with members and similar accounts more frequently, again in an effort to generate a sense of community. With our general meetings, we plan on including engaging games or challenges more frequently in the hopes of attracting and retaining members. I am very hopeful with our recruiting efforts moving forward and expect to see more consistent involvement from members in the next semester.
